Distinguished Fellow - 2005

SVEN WILLIAM ARNDT

The North American Economics and Finance Association is pleased to name Sven William Arndt as its Distinguished Fellow for 2005.

Sven Arndt’s career as a prominent and productive scholar goes back 4 decades and includes faculty positions at UCLA, UC-Santa Cruz, and at Claremont McKenna College, where he holds the Charles M. Stone Chair and directs the Lowe Institute of Political Economy, a research unit focused on topics in international trade and finance.

Professor Arndt has been a visiting scholar at universities and institutes in Germany, Austria, and Italy and has served in the public sector at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Arndt is the author or editor of eight books on international economics issues ranging from country studies to exchange rate determination and globalization. A theme in Arndt’s work has been changes in the division of labor as worldwide production is affected by regional integration and cross-border production networks. On the monetary side, regional trade agreements raise questions about currency integration, as illustrated by the euro’s replacement of national currencies. The pros and cons of linking national currencies or abandoning them are issues that have also been central to recent work by Prof. Arndt. He served as President-Elect and Program Chair of NAEFA in 1995 and assumed the presidency of the Association in 1996. He served as Program Chair again in 1998, when unforeseen circumstances required him to step in and provide crucial leadership.

Finally, perhaps most important and critical for the organization has been his editorship of our journal, the North American Journal of Economics and Finance, beginning in 2000. The journal had fallen on hard times and needed redirection and rejuvenation. Apart from the intellectual contribution that journal editorship entails, Prof. Arndt negotiated new publishing arrangements, restructured the editorial board, and increased the frequency of publication. Apart from its regular flow of insightful articles, the journal has featured symposia on such timely issues as deflation and inflation targeting in the international context, production networks and the WTO.

In short, whether we view Sven Arndt in terms of contributions to the field, intellectual prowess, or leadership contributions to the North American Economics and Finance Association, he is clearly deserving of this year’s distinguished fellow award.
