Distinguished Fellow - 2006

GEORGE G. KAUFMAN

The North American Economics and Finance Association is pleased to announce that Professor George G. Kaufman has been named its Distinguished Fellow for 2006. Professor Kaufman has been a distinguished scholar and contributor to finance, economics, central banks, and public policy institutions over a period that spans nearly five decades, the last 36 as professor of finance, first at the University of Oregon and currently at Loyola University Chicago.

Kaufman began his career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 1959, where he continues to be a consultant and advisor to the Bank to this day. Over his career, Kaufman has also been a visiting professor or scholar at numerous institutions including the University of Southern California, Stanford University, University of California Berkeley, U. S. Treasury Department, Federal Reserve Banks of San Francisco, Dallas, Cleveland and New York; and Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He has also served as editor or co-editor of numerous professional journals and was the founding editor of both the Journal of Financial Services Research and the Journal of Financial Stability. He is a founding member of the Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee, which he serves as its co-chair, and of the Financial Economists Roundtable, which he serves as Executive Director.

Kaufman’s research and publications have made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in a wide range of areas in finance and economics, including: monetary policy, banking regulation and public policy, portfolio management with special emphasis on the role of duration in controlling interest rate risk, auctioning of municipal bonds, deposit insurance reform, and resolving bank insolvencies and financial crises.

Kaufman is the author or editor of 22 books and over 140 articles in refereed or other peer-reviewed journals. He has served as an exemplar of scholarship in the use of finance and economics in the making of economic and financial policy in many countries around the world. Just as important, on a human note, he has been a mentor and guide to many dozens of young members in our profession.

Kaufman has been an active leader in the North American Economics and Finance Association for many years. He served as program chair in 2002 and as NAEFA’s President in 2003. Among his many other contributions to NAEFA that are worthy of special note is the affiliation he established with the Western Economic Association, which provides an annual summer meeting for NAEFA. This joint program affiliation has served as a means of retaining many members while attracting many new members to our organization. He has also served as a member of the editorial board of NAEFA’s journal since 1990.

In recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the economics and finance professions and to this association, George G. Kaufman is elected Distinguished Fellow.
